2012: Part II

Songs

Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know*

Many can agree (probably, I don't know), that Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know was the song of the year. It is probably the only Top 40 song this year that didn't get annoying even though I listened to it at least once a day for like 3 straight months. The video is great, too. I don't know what it is about it (Gotye's subtle facial expressions of pain and longing for that somebody that he used to know? The simplicity of the video? The nakedness that actually isn't vulgar?) but the video mesmerizes me every time I see it. And I don't watch music videos. I get distracted too quickly. Music videos aren't my thing. But this one; this one I couldn't tear my eyes away from. Yay Gotye! More music, please!

Avicii - Levels*

Believe it or not, I actually heard this song before I heard Flo-Rida's Good Feeling. I think I was at a café in Mexico when they played the video and I thought it was fun and the beat was cool. It took me a while to find the song again because "Avicii, levels" wasn't easy to remember, but soon enough I did. Good Feeling, which samples this song, was one of my party anthems this year. It's the one more easily found in clubs and on the radio. Given the choice, however, I prefer the one with fewer vocals. It's simpler and just as danceable as the other one.

Fun. - We Are Young*

If I had an anthem this year, it was this song. I turned 24 in May and I'm beginning to prefer quieter soirées at home over bar or club hopping. I went out clubbing twice this year and I had more fun than I expected to. My friends and I went to a club ridden with teenagers (this was in Mexico, where the drinking age is 18), and we all felt so old. When they played this song, however, we'd jump on the couches and belt it out and dance like we were 17 again. It became our theme and excuse for doing the foolish things that are still allowed at our age. This song does grow old, ironically, but it'll be forever tied to some of my fondest memories.

Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait

This song makes me feel like I'm being torn apart but hugged by a giant warm teddy bear at the same time. It makes me want to cry and laugh and smile and then cry a little more. This song sends me into deep thought every time I listen to it. It might sound a bit exaggerated but it's true. What a great record. Of course they're British.

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

Thank goodness for L.A.'s radio stations. One of my favorites, Star 98.7, introduced me to this song, which doesn't fail to get me going at the gym.

Macklemore feat. Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop

This song is just fantastic. Listen to it if you haven't already. Repeat as needed.

The Lumineers - Ho Hey

This is the song that makes me wish I were in love. Funny enough the thing I like least about this song is the 'ho heys'. It's so sweet, though. So melodious and sweet.

GROUPLOVE - Tongue Tied*

This was my good mood song this year. It just makes me smile.

AWOLNATION - Sail*

Have you seen the video with the cat? What a gem! The whole song is great too, though. Completely worth a download.

Muse - Madness

I (and the radio) have played this song way too much. I'm no Muse fan, but this song had me hooked from the first five seconds.

Maroon 5 - One More Night

Sexiest song, most disappointing video. Above is the lyric video because the actual video was not what I expected (or hoped for) at all. Still one of my current gym staples, though. Still picture Adam Levine being sexy while I listen to it, though.

The Wanted - Glad You Came*

I don't know about you, but this song makes me want to dress up and hit the town on New Year's Eve (or any eve, really). It's kind of cute and kind of sexy with a very summery vibe. It was that song I'd hope they played whenever I went out this year. It makes me want to dance and let loose. Love it.

One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful*

I know, I know, it's One Direction, blah, blah, blah. I think they're adorable, and when they performed it at the Olympics' closing ceremony, I kind of wished I were a teenage girl again.
I've only recently grown fond of this song, which is why it is on this list. Don't blame me, it's cute.

Die Antwoord - I Fink You Freeky

Raise your hand if you like Die Antwoord! They are so weird. Their videos are bizarre in that what-the-f***-but-I-can't-take-my-eyes-off-it kind of way. Yet, despite their chic tailer trash getups and almost frighteningly enthralling music videos, their actual music ain't half bad. Take this song, for example, is it hip-hop, is it electro, is it pop, is it the future, is it the past, is it something sort of wonderful? Probably all of the above. Die Antwoord is unique and strange and very hard not to love. Listen to them and watch their videos, if you dare.

Crystal Fighters - Champion Sound*

I stand by my statement that Grouplove's Tongue Tied was my good mood song of the year, but this one has earned a direct pass to my list of good mood songs of my life. All I do is smile when I listen to this song. It's cheery without being cheesy. It's even my alarm in the morning because it always starts off my day right. I love this song and if you're into happiness at all, I know you will too.

There you have it, my personal and as usual very biased pick of the best songs of 2012*[see note].
Did any of these make your list?

Thanks for listening! Don't be a stranger, leave a comment!
